I believe that the industry of healthcare is extremely fascinating and has the potential to change the lives of all individuals involved. I chose to pursue a career in healthcare because I think that taking care of people and showing them that they matter is extremely important. I think that the healthcare field can allow the provider to have a relationship with their patients and truly make a difference in their lives. While many people may feel extremely low or burned out when they are sick, I think that the opportunity that the healthcare provider has to boost their confidence and improve their physical and mental well being is incredible. Even though a career in healthcare will not come without its challenges, I think that the reward that a practitioner may feel from seeing their patients progress is invaluable. My recent endeavors as an intern for a clinical decision making support system called, MyPL, opened my eyes to a world of healthcare that I never realized existed, and heightened my desire to pursue a career in the medical field.

My internship with MyPL opened my eyes to new opportunities and another perspective of healthcare. MyPL is a decision making support tool that has a current focus on oncology. The ability for MyPL to gather information and organize it in a way that is helpful for clinicians and patients is incredible, and their passion and care for the people that they serve is admirable. I chose to intern for MyPL because their passion and dedication for what they do and who they serve stands out from the rest. MyPL’s focus while I was an intern was on Tumor Board Meetings and workflow management. They have developed a system that allows clinicians to input information into their softwares in a more straightforward and concise way, which creates a very organized and complex patient profile. This patient profile is shared with all appropriate and relevant healthcare professions so that everyone is on the same page, and can treat the patient appropriately and in a timely manner.

My role with MyPL allowed me to learn and grow tremendously both culturally and professionally. My specific role within MyPL was to learn about the company and research potential competitors in the industry. I was tasked with giving my opinions based on research and comparisons that I made between other decision making support softwares. I accomplished this through meeting with my supervisor regularly, reading documents that he sent to me, reviewing company data, asking many questions, watching company demos, and doing my own personal research on not only MyPL, but other companies that may be perceived or considered as competitors. The ultimate goal for me was to provide an unbiased opinion on strengths, weaknesses, and comparisons in the form of a paper, schematics, and a spreadsheet. The job that I was given at MyPL was very unique to me as I never pictured myself working for a company that has so much technological involvement. I became extremely fascinated with the work that MyPL does, and has the capability to do, and thoroughly enjoyed learning and being exposed to a world of healthcare that I was previously unaware of. Although I am still planning to pursue a career in therapy, I am very intrigued by the work of MyPL, and think that their softwares could make a world of difference for all professionals and patients in the healthcare industry. It is important to me to take the concept of care and consideration for the individuals that MyPL clearly displays into my future career. Some goals that I have set for my future career are to take into consideration how new technology can improve or hinder the treatment and outcome of a patient and realize how technology must be adapted to suit different cultures in order to provide the best possible quality of care. I have learned through my internship that not all technology works for all populations, and there are adjustments that must be made in order for the technology to reach its maximum potential in improving clinical outcome and workflow management. This perspective is invaluable, and I know that it will help me to become a better individual and professional in the industry.
